PFAS, also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large group of synthetic chemicals used in many industries for water-, oil-, and stain-repellent properties.

In textiles and consumer products, PFAS may be found in performance materials, coated fabrics, leather, upholstery, carpets, packaging, foams, elastomers, and chemical formulations.

FAQs

To ensure that the relevant PFAS compounds are tested, we first clarify the client’s specific requirements. This includes identifying the product category, the client type, such as a brand, supplier or manufacturer, and the target markets in which the product must comply with regulatory requirements, for example OEKO-TEX®, the EU or individual US states. Based on this information, we can recommend the most suitable individual test method or testing suite.

Yes, if the requirements are legal requirements EU or France, this can be shown in the test report.

TESTEX can analyse a wide range of materials and product types for PFAS, including chemical formulations such as paints, glues, adhesives, coatings, inks and detergents; textiles and fabrics such as cotton, wool, polyester and polyamide; leather materials; polymeric materials such as PA, PAN, PET and PP; cellulose-based materials such as cardboard and paper; rubbers and elastomers such as SBR and EPDM; foams such as polyurethane foams; as well as food-contact and consumer products, including coated materials, packaging films and paper-based containers. Please note that aqueous samples, such as wastewater or other water samples, environmental samples, such as soil, sediment and surface water, and food matrices cannot currently be tested.

To ensure reliable and accurate test results, a sufficient amount of sample material is required. For textiles and other solid test samples, a minimum of 50 g should be provided. Chemical formulations also require a minimum sample quantity of 50 g. If your sample is limited or differs from these requirements, please contact us to discuss the available testing options.

For each PFAS testing method, an individual test report is provided. The Total Fluorine Report shows the level of Total Fluorine (TF) detected in the tested sample using combustion ion chromatography (C-IC). The Targeted PFAS Report lists the regulated PFAS compounds analysed and indicates whether the sample complies with the applicable legal or OEKO-TEX® limit values. The Non-Targeted PFAS Report lists all detected PFAS compounds and includes semi-quantitative results that provide reference values for the estimated PFAS concentrations.

The testing and reporting process typically takes 15–20 business days from receipt of the samples at the laboratory.
