How France’s Refashion Eco-Modulations Reward Sustainable Textile Practices: The OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN Advantage

29.05.25

France's Refashion is the official eco-organization responsible for managing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the textile, footwear, and household linen sectors. To promote sustainable practices, Refashion has implemented an eco-modulation system that adjusts the eco-contribution fees paid by producers based on the environmental performance of their products. This system includes bonuses for brands’ environmentally friendly practices, but also benefits suppliers who already comply with these requirements as they have a competitive advantage.

Eco-Modulation Bonuses

Refashion offers bonuses in the following categories:

  • Product Durability: Incentivizing products designed for longevity.
  • Environmental Certifications: Recognizing products certified by specific environmental labels.
  • Incorporation of Recycled Materials: Encouraging the use of recycled raw materials in products.

OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN and the Certification Bonus

The OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN label is among the eight environmental certifications recognized by Refashion for the certification bonus. This label signifies that a product has been tested for harmful substances and manufactured in environmentally friendly facilities under safe and socially responsible working conditions.

To qualify for the certification bonus:

  • Finished Product Certification: The entire product, not just individual components, must be certified.
  • Non-Cumulative Bonus: Even if a product holds multiple recognized certifications, it is eligible for only one certification bonus.
  • Bonus Amounts: The bonus is €0.30 or €0.03 per item, depending on the product category (clothing, household linen, or footwear) and the volume placed on the market.

Documentation Requirements

To receive the certification bonus, producers must submit appropriate supporting documentation for each product reference. This includes valid certification documents that clearly state the product's name and reference. For OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN it is the OEKO-TEX® product list certificate. The specific requirements for documentation vary depending on the certification label and are detailed in Refashion's eco-modulation guide.

By aligning with recognized environmental certifications like OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN, producers not only contribute to sustainable practices but also benefit from financial incentives under France's eco-modulation system. This approach encourages the production of environmentally friendly and socially responsible textile products.
